I write short stories, feature stories, newsletters, essays, and other assorted blather. I've written one novel
and worked on one or two others. I'm at work on my MFA
Thesis novel set in 1865 Virginia. |
Like most writers, I can't NOT write, or I go nuts. I love going
into the daze of another world, and I even like going back and
crafting sentences as artfully as I can - when there's time. |

Photos of places I've been, and, of course, the cats and dogs!

Okay, I'm a ring head. Number One is J.R.R. Tolkien.
Number Two through 100... depends on the day. Sometimes I
like to escape when I read. Then I like to either read
Elizabeth Peters or listen to one of her books on tape, even
though I already have a zillion times. And, yes, I loved all the
Harry Potter books and I can't wait for the next movie. So snub
me. The most hilarious and fun writer I know is Jayne Ormerod.
She has a story in Chesapeake Crimes 3. I can't understand why
some agent hasn't snapped up her fantastic mystery novels. Maria
Hudgins is another fav - she takes you places you've never been!

When I want something a little more deeply satisfying, I turn to
Alice Munro, Toni Morrison, Sena Jeter Naslund, Annie Dillard,
Barbara Kingsolver, Rudyard Kipling, Lenore Hart, Faulkner,
Hemingway, and Eleanor Lincoln Morse to name a few that occur to me
easily.
I probably read eight to ten books a month: Literary fiction
and short stories, books on writing and African American
history, and the occasional historical fiction novel or cozy
mystery. Part of the MFA, of course, is reading. |
